What is a Cataract?
A Cataract is the name given to the natural lens inside the eye when it has become cloudy or less clear in appearance. A common misconception is that the cataract is like a "film" or "skin" that has grown over the eye, and this simply is not true. In actual fact, if you are suffering from a cataract, then the lens itself has gone cloudy and this can occur due to age, trauma, diabetes, or genetics to name a few causes.
Cataract Surgery:
Modern Day Surgery can effectively remove the cataract in a procedure that in most cases lasts no longer than 30 minutes and does not require injections. At LondonOC, our skilled ophthalmic surgeons use only the best techniques, such as topical anaesthesia, keeping you comfortable without the need for injections. We utilise the latest keyhole surgery (without stitches) and remove the cataract using state of the art, ultrasound machines. Most of our procedures are done using a new ‘chop’ technique to further minimise the energy used during the procedure.

Choosing the Right Lens:
The artificial lens chosen especially for your eye will give you clear vision for the rest of your life. Your eye surgeon will advise you on the most suitable lenses available and you will have a choice; for example you may opt for a lens that gives you clear vision in the distance and reading (a multi-focal lens), or a special yellow lens that protects the delicate retinal layers in your eye from harmful UV-rays from the sun.
We offer new multifocal toric and prismatic lenses, correcting all types of refractive errors.
For patients with poor vision, and where previously it was said 'nothing can be done', now have the option of micro-telescope implants giving new powerful imagery to patients with diseased retina!
