London’s Top Choice: Award-Winning Clinic for Exceptional Eye Care
Pterygium Removal
A Pterygium is a fibrovascular, benign growth on the conjunctiva and cornea of the eye. It is thought to be the result of long term sun exposure (especially if this occurred during childhood) and very occasionally causes significant loss of vision.
Pterygium is usually harmless but can cause discomfort; especially if it presents in both eyes – which is typical.
Occasionally, eyedrops can help in alleviating the associated dryness and discomfort by keeping the area moist, but no eyedrop is capable of removing the Pterygium; hence why pterygium removal via surgery is often necessary. Surgical removal is certainly effective. It’s usually performed due to cosmetic reasons, or if the Pterygium is causing discomfort, or disturbing vision.
Expert pterygium removal, restoring your vision.
Our surgeons always use a graft during surgery to significantly reduce the chances of recurrence in the long term; the procedure is always performed under topical anaesthetic, so there’s no need for any kind of injection.
The surgery takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes to complete, and our surgeons deploy skilful techniques such as amniotic membrane or autografting, with adhesive glue or absorbable sutures. Each treatment is tailored to give you the very best results, with the full restoration of a white, comfortable eye.
Following the surgery, it’s likely that your surgeon will prescribe steroid eye drops, to prevent a recurrence of the problem, whilst also reducing the post-surgery inflammation. Patients undergoing Pterygium surgery will also be closely monitored by their Ophthalmic surgeon for up to 12 months following the treatment. This is due to the small likelihood of the Pterygium’s recurrence during the first year. Attending regular eye checks will allow our team to identify and resolve any underlying problems quickly.
The Ophthalmic surgeons at our clinic will be able to determine the frequency of these checks on a patient-by-patient basis. We are highly experienced in all areas of eye health, and we can provide a thorough and in-depth eye health check to identify any follow-up treatments that might be required.
Pterygium may be prevented by wearing sunglasses daily when outdoors. This protects the eyes from damaging ultraviolet light, even on cloudy days. It’s also strongly recommended that you keep your eyes moist and clean, especially in dry conditions.
