Treatments and surgery for Glaucoma

Finding out you have glaucoma might come as a shock especially if you don’t have any typical characteristics like diabetes or previous history in the family. We would provide ophthalmic support to ensure that the best treatment plan possible was in place for your glaucoma surgery. Helping you to feel comfortable is our priority as we recognise that eye surgery to treat glaucoma might seem invasive and daunting.

At LondonOC, we like to try the less invasive options first, but often resort to the most effective treatment of all – surgery. We understand that the prospect of surgery on your eyes can be scary, however, our experts feel that this is the best way to ensure a permanent fix when the less invasive procedures have failed.

Glaucoma laser treatment has become increasingly common and can in many cases mean the patient can resume normal activities in a short amount of time. There are various types of laser surgery options most of which will still be combined with medication of some kind. This combined approach should help to reduce intraocular eye pressure and maintain it too.

Having any surgery can be daunting but glaucoma laser surgery is usually a faster and more effective treatment with little interference to daily life once complete. Sometimes it might be necessary to repeat a procedure but individual outcomes and next steps can be discussed with an ophthalmologist.

Our Glaucoma surgery is conducted in our purpose-built London facility, which is equipped with the most modern equipment on the market. The surgery itself utilises modern techniques with very small incisions and minimal stitches, meaning you will be back to using your eyes to their full potential as soon as possible.

LondonOC provides the following treatments for Glaucoma:

Eye Drop Therapies- We have available all the latest, most powerful, once-daily eye-drop combinations – ask for more information.

This is a new and repeatable treatment without scarring, that painlessly lowers pressure and allows many patients to do away with their daily eye drops. This allows our consultant ophthalmologist to deliver new treatments which were not possible, or as effective, with previous Argon Type lasers.

Glaucoma Drainage Surgery
Using powerful anti-scarring agents, and releasable stitches, Glaucoma Drainage Surgery is a proven method to give you optimal results. Our glaucoma specialist consultant surgeons will guide you on which procedure will give you the best pressure control, and all surgeries can be performed under local anaesthetic so you are able to go home on the same day as the surgery.

Trabeculectomy– modified with minimally invasive techniques providing safer & quicker surgery with microtube implants, achieving high success rates and faster recovery. NEW EXPRESS SHUNTS to lower pressure -effective & safe.

Canaloplasty
This is a new procedure which uses safer non-penetrating techniques to open up the drainage canal without ever entering the eye. These new techniques which allow safe and effective surgical treatment for high eye pressures are available at LondonOC under the care of our consultant glaucoma surgeon, Mr. V. Sharma.

iStent- new drainage device which safely lowers pressure the natural way without having to cut into the skin (conjunctiva) so reducing the risk of scarring or failure. A quick and effective way of lowering pressure, with less trauma to the eye than conventional surgery.

Xen implant
a 6mm microtube with no cuts or stitches in the conjunctiva and performed with just drops in under 5 minutes. This microtube is so small and effective it has revolutionised glaucoma surgery allowing us to simplify the procedure and still have the benefits of safe, long-lasting drainage.
