SLT - Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty at LondonOC
LondonOC specialise in innovative technology to diagnose, monitor and treat Glaucoma
SLT Laser
It's estimated 1 in 50 people will develop Glaucoma over the age of 40.
The Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty or SLT is new technology using a safer more accurate laser to deliver a long established treatment – Trabeculoplasty. This laser does not cause any scarring (unlike the old argon type lasers) and therefore can be safely used without causing any detriment to the eye or risk to any future surgeries (if required).
The Laser trabeculoplasty surgeries are used for patients with open angle glaucoma, and in some other secondary glaucomas. The laser is utilised to treat the drainage system of the eye known as the trabecular meshwork. Treating this area of the natural internal draining system is designed to improve the outflow of fluid from the eye. This type of laser surgery will be effective in some patients but not in all. The type of glaucoma may determine your response you have and the specific structures found in your drainage system. About 80% of patients have an adequate pressure reduction of 20-30%. The laser is painless, very safe, and requires no specialist pre or after care.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty for Glaucoma Treatment
While there are medical conditions and hereditary traits that can increase your chances of having glaucoma, this is a disease that can strike anybody.
The Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty procedure may be performed in one or two trips to the centre. The laser machine is similar to the examination microscope that the ophthalmologist uses at each visit to look into your eyes. The laser itself makes very little noise and you may see a red beam. Nearly all patients find the procedure comfortable and it is usually pain free. The procedure generally takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
The laser is proven to be safe and effective. It is well established in Ophthalmology, having been used for decades in the treatments of not only glaucoma but also retinal conditions. The new generations of this type of laser have made the treatment not only more effective, but more accessible for many patients who require a lower eye pressure, and a healthier eye!
